Film Training

While access to making a film is easier, sophisticated thinking and basic skills are still needed to create viable ideas, draft a script, plan the filming and direct the actors or other participants effectively.

There is huge potential for creativity but the basic skills must be mastered.

Initial Film Training:

You will have personal tuition on a 1-1 or 1-2 basis so that you get a quick efficient introduction to the basics of film making.

The Camcorder:

You will learn how to operate the camcorder to compose shots and make the camera movements required such as zooms, pans and using a fixed lens,and when to use the camera hand held or on a tripod taking into account the aim of the filmed sequence of shots planned to be linked together in the editing process.

Editing:

The basic processes of non-linear editing will be covered, using the application Final Cut Express on an Apple Mac computer. As the film is on the computer, the editing process is organic. As expertise develops, new film can be added and the final version elaborated and improved.

Basic commentary and music will be introduced to the sequence at this stage.

Intermediate film training

More advanced techniques are now best learnt as you make your first film.

This training can be covered in two days or four half days depending on time available.

Direction

You will cover the research process leading to a treatment and script. Also the skills required to set up interviews .The course will encourage the ability to work in a team or individually as required.

Further film training techniques:

You will learn the techniques required to film interviews and capture the activities of ordinary folk in their daily life.

Advanced Editing

More sophisticated techniques will be learnt. Digital graphics will be explored to place titles and credits to the film sequence.Special Effects: filters ,transitions, masks, key framing ,composite modes etc.

From time to time there will be seminars arranged with visiting professionals on topics such as:

  • The operation of the professional digital camera eg the sony Z1

  • Lighting for digital video.

  • Advanced editing techniques.

  • Directing actors for the digital film maker.

Full-time film training

If you have sufficient time available you can learn on a full-time basis.

A preliminary talk with HL is a good idea.

Cost: £1950 for four weeks.

Individual Training

Cost will be based on £275 for four half days
