Marketing and Digital Film Making:

A company may wish to have someone on their staff trained in film making.

There are then three paths to follow.

The first route you or a colleague use a short intensive training course to gain an understanding of how to make film . You or a colleague may then work with Highgate Digital Arts as an associate producer to make appropriate films for your business.

The second route is for the business concerned to want to control their own digital film making . In which case designated members of your company can take further film making courses with Highgate Digital Arts so as to be able to set updigital film making within your own company. We would then be able to work on a consultancy basis whenever this is helpful.

The third route is to contract us directly to make a film for you

Examples of student’s projects:

  • An academic sociologist works with local groups in Brazil. She wants to bring her research work alive to her students . So she films her work in Brazil.

  • A retired judge has many hours of holiday film that he wishes to show his family and friends.

  • An artist and dancer want to explore experimental film making. They will work together and show their work at film festivals.

Read Harry’s page on what makes a good documentary film.

The use of digital film making techniques in making documentary films has major implications. Compared with the earlier days of film stock, editing suites, camera crews etc., the capital required to make films today is very small. Now the filmmaker needs only a good quality digital film camera (camcorder) and a computer. This new and increasingly affordable technology has dramatically opened up the world of film making, giving access to anyone with an interest.

Also important, the scope for distribution via the Internet, DVDs and other channels lessens the monopoly of mass media on the filmmaker’s output.

Once "burned", a DVD can easily be

  • Speaking engagements can be arranged to accompany a screening.

  • Projections shown at film clubs and many other outlets.

So access to a large audience becomes possible, even on a very small budget. After only a short intensive course with personal tuition students are ready to start making their own films. Further deepening of film making knowledge then comes from being involved in making films.

This personal 1-1 approach to digital film making is being pioneered by Harry Levinson. This is a very different approach to the expensive and time consuming method usually followed taking degrees and diplomas and many technical courses
